A Traction Elevator is a type of elevator that moves the car using steel ropes (hoist ropes) and a counterweight system, driven by an electric motor connected to a traction sheave (a grooved pulley). The motor rotates the sheave, and the ropes either lift or lower the elevator car by frictional grip (traction) between the ropes and the sheave.
